There are several hiking trails in Swaziland, a small country bordered by South Africa and Mozambique, ranging from easy to strenuous walks.

Swaziland is a beautiful African country with mountains, gorges, forests and granite outcrops that are wondrous to behold. Unpopulated areas and unspoiled routes make for a diversion from the stresses and pressures of modern life.

Ngwempisi Hiking Trail

This trail is found in the Ntfungulu Hills in the center of Swaziland. The hike starts at Kopho camp, a cave-like dwelling in the sense that the walls comprise of the natural, enormous boulders found in the area.

A trail to see the Ngwempisi River Gorge will not disappoint even the most jaded of hikers. The track is challenging, through woodlands and mountainous terrain. The bird-life is prolific, as is the indigenous flora. The geology of the area calls for many stops along the way to admire the variety of sights.

Sibebe Mountain

Ten kilometers outside of the city of Mbabane is Sibebe Rock, one of the world's largest exposed granite domes. The trail itself is not too challenging, starting at about 800 meters above sea level and ending at around 1 488 meters. This geological wonder is said to be older than Ayers Rock in Australia and, some say, just as impressive. A hidden treasure indeed, since Ayers Rock attracts approximately half a million visitors annually, while at Sibebe, you and the guide you choose to accompany you, may well be the only visitors in the area.

Lebombo Mountains

Shewula Mountain Camp is found in the Lebombo Mountains, almost on the border with Mozambique. This camp offers catered or self-catering accommodation with a hallmark of traditional Swazi hospitality. Expect to be warmly welcomed and enjoy interacting with the locals, perhaps even getting involved in the local, informal “marula beer making factory”.

Visitors to Swaziland generally find that the roads are safe and in good condition. The locals are friendly and hospitable. Remember to take good hiking boots with, as trails can be rough, sunscreen and a hat. The bush can be overgrown, so take precautions against ticks, malaria and other pests.

While locals are not threatening at all and appreciate tourism to their country, remember to take precautions in the bigger cities and towns by not wandering around the streets late at night and staying away from unsavoury areas.
